Breast Surgery

At Cayman Islands Surgery Center, we take breast health seriously. From treating and screening for breast cancer to treating fibrocystic breast disease and offering guidance to women struggling with breastfeeding, we understand how big of a role breast health plays in a woman’s life. We also work together with plastic surgeons who perform reconstructive breast surgeries for patients treated in our clinic and elsewhere.

Breast Surgery

Our surgeon, Dr. Tanja Ebanks, is a leading expert in breast procedures, including clinical checks, breast cancer screening, breast cancer biopsies, mastectomy, lumpectomy and more.

She has gained extensive knowledge and experience helping women in the Cayman Islands, as well as internationally, get prompt diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of breast conditions.

We can perform a lot of necessary diagnostic procedures and treatments at our clinic, allowing our patients to get almost everything from diagnosis to follow-up care on the Islands. If we are unable to provide the treatment you need for any reason, we have a wide referral network to connect you to. Treatments offered in our clinic thanks to our experienced multidisciplinary team and state-of-the-art tools include:

Annual Clinic Checks

Annual clinic checks are the first step in breast cancer screening. If you are concerned about any new breast changes or are worried about breast cancer, Dr. Tanja Ebanks can perform a clinical breast exam and refer you for the appropriate imaging depending on your personal history, concerns and the clinical findings. These might be a screening mammogram, a screening MRI or a breast ultrasound to look for any suspicious changes in your breasts.

Breast Cancer Management and follow up

If you were diagnosed with breast cancer abroad but wish to get treatment on the Islands or if you have already received treatment elsewhere but need to continue your follow up here, Dr. Ebanks can perform surgical procedures, follow you up with clinical exams and imaging as needed and refer you to specialists on the Islands for a multidisciplinary approach, so you can get prompt treatment.

Breast Cancer Treatment

At Cayman Islands Surgery Center, we provide a lot of diagnostic tools and procedures to our patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Dr. Ebanks regularly performs biopsies and surgery to diagnose and treat breast cancer. She works closely with a team of specialists who can provide radiation therapy, chemotherapy, breast reconstruction and other essentials of breast cancer care.

Mastectomy and immediate Breast Reconstruction

After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Dr. Ebanks might need to do a mastectomy or a double mastectomy for you. You may wish to start to rebuild the look of your breasts immediately. Breast reconstruction can help restore the look and feel of your breasts with the help of implants or tissue flaps. Dr. Ebanks works with leading plastic surgeons from different countries who specialize in reconstructive breast surgery and collaborate with Dr. Ebanks to offer immediate reconstruction on the day of your mastectomy.

Fibrocystic Breasts

While fibrocystic breasts are no longer considered a disease, this condition can still affect a woman’s quality of life. If you have a particularly painful case of fibrocystic breast disease, Dr. Ebanks can offer fine-needle aspiration or a lumpectomy to treat the condition and relief symptoms and confirm the clinical diagnose.

Lumpectomy

Breastfeeding issues are fairly common and often lead to the cessation of breastfeeding, which is unfortunate for both mother and baby. If caught early, breastfeeding issues are easy to treat. This is why we recommend contacting us as soon as you notice problems like blocked milk ducts, cracked nipples, breast pain or latching difficulties.

Open Breast Biopsy

If doctors found a suspicious mass during your last breast cancer screening but standard tests failed to prove or rule out cancer, Dr. Ebanks can perform an open breast biopsy. While rarely needed, an open biopsy is necessary for some patients at risk for breast cancer.

Mastitis

When you have early breast cancer showing as a small lump, there is usually no need to remove the entire breast. Instead, we may perform a lumpectomy. Also known as a partial mastectomy, a lumpectomy is regularly performed at Cayman Islands Surgery Center with high success rates. A lumpectomy is also done to remove other benign breast findings to help alleviate symptoms and confirm benign diagnosis.

Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy

An ultrasound-guided biopsy is a procedure that helps doctors diagnose or rule out breast cancer. This type of biopsy is the gold standard and preferred option for breast biopsies, because it is minimally invasive, quick, comes with no downtime and is highly accurate. There’s no need to use radiation during an ultrasound-guided biopsy, and scarring is minimal.
