Education & Background
Cayman Surgery Founder
Dr. Ebanks attended the University of Bern and graduated with her medical degree in 1997. She then returned to her hometown to complete a specialty program focused on general surgery and traumatology. In 1999, she and her husband moved to Western Samoa for a year, where she volunteered as a surgical registrar for a modest living and housing allowance.
“Working as a volunteer was a great and very rewarding experience for me, something I would recommend to anyone in the medical field. To be exposed to medicine in a developing nation, where people have a different attitude towards life, illness, and death, is truly a character-building experience,” says Dr. Ebanks of her volunteer work.
In addition to spending two years in Grenchen and Biel specializing in general surgery and traumatology, Dr. Ebanks worked 2 years in hand and plastic surgery in Lucerne as a surgical registrar. During this time, she also regularly attended to hand and burn emergencies that required surgical intervention. She fine-tuned her microsurgical skills working on these complex cases, including free flaps, replantation, and revascularization. After pursuing these specialties, Dr. Ebanks decided that her true passion was general surgery. For two more years, she worked as a junior consultant in general surgery and traumatology in Delemont, the French-speaking side of Switzerland. In 2005, she received her Swiss general surgery title of FMH, followed by her registration as a general surgeon in the British GMC in June 2006.
Life in the Cayman Islands
The next chapter for Dr. Ebanks and her husband was a move to the Cayman Islands, where she became licensed with the Cayman Island Health Practice Commission (HPC) as a medical doctor and general surgeon. Shortly after the move, her first post was with the Health Service Authority as a general surgeon, where she got to know the locals and gain experience in one of the country’s premier healthcare facilities.
In November 2006, she opened her first private practice. Since February 2007, Dr. Ebanks has been affiliated with CTMH Doctors Hospital, formerly the Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Hospital. Her professional relationships have allowed her to stay at the forefront of new technology and the ever-changing developments in medicine. They have also allowed her to work with visiting specialists to give patients the best care possible.
In November 2021 Dr. Ebanks has moved her practice to Governors Square, she continues to do most of her surgeries at CTMH Doctors Hospital, but also has privileges at the Health Services Authority. At Governors Square Dr. Ebanks was joined by Tatiana Kosinchar, ultrasound technician. Cayman Surgery is now offering in house ultrasound guided procedures, such as breast biopsies, sclerotherapy, and also most smaller procedures that can be done under local anesthesia are being carried out in the new location.
Dr. Ebanks’ practice has grown over the years, and the services that she offers include, but are not limited to:
- Breast surgery
- Treatment of varicose and spider veins
- Hand surgery
- General surgery
Advancing Healthcare in the Cayman Islands
Dr. Ebanks has worked tirelessly to advance the quality and accessibility of medical care in the Cayman Islands, collaborating with local providers to meet the needs of residents. Her private practice has built on the experience and knowledge she’s gained throughout the years to provide a range of treatment options, so patients don’t have to travel abroad to receive high-quality services that can improve their health and comfort. This commitment is also reflected in her application of new technology and professional affiliations. In September of 2007, CTMH purchased the first laser to perform EVLT, a minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins, and Dr. Ebanks was the first doctor on the island trained for its use. In July 2008, she became a member of the American College of Phlebology (ACP), which afforded her an opportunity to collaborate with some of the leading vein specialists from around the world. Her professionally cultivated relationships provide a vast network for consultations and referrals if a problem cannot be managed on the island. Dr. Ebanks has also increased access to comprehensive breast care on the island. She is able to treat all breast conditions locally in collaboration with local and visiting specialists including oncologists, radiologists, surgeons and pathologists. Along with the advanced equipment and imaging technology she has available, Dr. Ebanks can provide in-office ultrasounds and breast biopsies to improve the diagnostic process. Additionally, she has developed an excellent working relationship with visiting plastic surgeon Dr. Eduardo Barroso and since early 2021 with Dr. Anne Dancey.
